Have you ever wondered why you hold yourself back and not go full out for your dreams even when all the odds are stacked in your favor and all doors are open, just waiting for you to take the jump.
Listening to the words to a song that means a lot to me “The Rose” by Better Midler, it puts it in a nut shell:
“It’s the heart afraid of breaking, that never learns to dance.
It’s the dream afraid of waking, that never takes the chance.
It’s the soul afraid of dying, that never learns to live”
For me, that fear was released with the biggest loss in my life, my dad. It hit me like a ton of bricks, for me to live my life to the full as I wanted, I needed to figure out what I really wanted. I needed to step it up, to stop living my life for others. I needed to stop thinking that I had to be strong. I made a conscious decision to start living, although never to the detriment of my family.
So how do we overcome our fears? From my experience only I offer the following:
- Raise your self awareness levels, become consciously aware of what you are afraid of. I had never thought of myself as “fearful” yet, I feared letting everyone down. I feared not being there when they needed me. I feared not having all the answers.
- Second overcome your fear by feeling the fear and doing it anyway. I jumped out of an airplane at 10,000 feet. Something I had dreamed of doing for 30 years. You have no idea how freeing the experience was. Feel the fear? I sure did, all the way up and all the way down! If I can do this. I can do anything!
- And if step two is too out there, then take baby steps to overcome your fears. Build on your confidence levels one step at a time, minute by minute, day by day and then gradually as you gain the confidence, go full-out for your dreams.
Whatever works for you – don’t just think about it, do it. It doesn’t happen over night and it does happen.
Trust me, it’s a journey you will enjoy, it’s totally worth the effort and extremely rewarding in the long run.
Have fun, focus on success and let go of your fears.
The choice is yours. What’s stopping you?
