330 Self First

Reading a post by Personal Effectiveness Expert and Thoughtleader, Chirstina Guidotti reminded me of a statement that many struggle with.   SELF FIRST is NOT Selfish.   What do you think?

Is putting yourself first selfish?  Is saying NO selfish?

It has taken me years to come to terms with this thinking and I am now a firm believer that putting yourself first is NOT selfish.  In fact I believe, putting yourself first is the most valuable thing you can do for yourself, for your family, for your business, for your career, for your community in general.

It does not mean that your world becomes exclusively about you to the detriment of others around you.  What it does mean is that you prioritize time for yourself physically, mentally and emotionally.   For me, self-first is more closely aligned to self-respect, self-belief and self-worth than it is with selfishness.

The more you respect yourself, the more you respect the world around you and the more likely you’ll be to live a positive life.

The more you believe in yourself, the more you will open up and share with others — what you share may just be the inspiration someone else needs.

The more time you invest in yourself, the more you will be able to give of yourself to others.

The more refreshed and energized you are, the more you will be able to care for the people and things that matter most in your life.

There’s a reason why, when on a plane, flight attendants say to place the oxygen mask on yourself first before helping others. If you don’t care for yourself, you won’t have the capacity to help others.

So, check your schedule –

  • It’s easy to find excuses when it comes to doing something good for yourself.
  • There are plenty of reasons why you should be doing something for someone else instead.
  • Stop letting that little voice in your head guilt you into giving until you have nothing more to give.

Try it today.  Give Self First a go, see where it takes your Self Respect, your Self Worth, your Self Belief.

Go on, what have you got to lose?
